MELTED DATA

Friday, May 8th, 2015

Almost every month someone in Canada sends a hard drive that has been involved in a house fire. They often resemble burnt bricks like the picture below of a drive we recently received from a client in London, Ontario. None of our techs were in a hurry to get their hands dirty, but as terrible as these situations look, there is often an easy recovery lurking just under the mess!

Plastic melts easily and this external hard drive is in-cased in plastic like a pair of jeans on a teenager in the 80’s.

But with a little invasive surgery we are able to free the hard drive from its prison.

But will the prisoner be able to talk?

As we have discussed various times in this blog, it is the condition of the disks that will ultimately decide if we can make this hard drive talk again. So let’s open the bonnet and have a peak under the hood …

WOW! It looks pristine. Notice the lack of any contamination due to the fire or the liquids used to douse it. We proceeded to perform a full recovery on this case by replacing only the PCB

Below is another fire victim from a client in Montreal, Quebec which was not in such great shape when we opened the lid. In fact, it may not be recoverable … but we’ll never know for sure as the client declined our quote.

As a general rule for data recovery purposes, fire damaged drives are not typically unrecoverable due to the heat and smoke of the fire, BUT more often, it is the excessive use of firefighting liquids that do the damage, especially if they are allowed to dry out. The drying out leaves mineral and other debris deposits on the disks which are tough to overcome.

And here is a look of what happens when someone applies power to a fire damaged hard drive that has had the sealed assembly breached. You can see the deep ring on the inside of the disk where the heads are. This disk drive will NOT be recoverable.

So if you have a sad looking case of melted data don’t give up hope, data recovery may be as easy as a PCB replacement.

iTech2013 … How was the show?

Friday, May 31st, 2013

Today’s blog features a guest post from Larry Shulman, our Business Development Manager.

Last week Memofix Hitech Services Inc. exhibited at the iTech show in Toronto.

Exhibitor products and services ranged from Infrastructure & Data Centre Operations, Storage Innovations & Big Data, Servers & OS, Communications & Connectivity, Security & Risk Management, Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity, Cloud Services & Solutions, Virtualization, Mobile Apps & Hardware and managed IT Services.

Being an “independent” show (not sponsored by a particular manufacturer or distributor) it seemed to attract a nice balance of small to medium business (SMB), and smaller solution / service providers (VAR’s, consultants, resellers). As an exhibitor that provides solutions to both SMB’s and resellers what I found interesting was that those in attendance have the same challenges, obstacles and goals as their larger counterparts (corporations, government etc.) and that both are looking for solutions to support what is becoming a very complex landscape of demands and requirements.

The solutions that Memofix presented: data recovery services, tape and hard disk repair, data destruction services, storage ITAD solutions and cloud back were well received by both SMB and solution providers in attendance. SMB’s seemed to be relieved knowing there is a company that offers these types of recovery solutions when and if needed and solution providers were excited that through Memofix they can add additional “value added services” to their customers.

As a grizzled veteran of the IT industry (over 25 years) as I walked the show floor I am still amazed and in awe at the technology solutions being developed by IT companies including Memofix to support the requirements of both large and small. I have to appreciate our industry for the good work they continue do in support of clients, and trying to stay one step ahead of what the customer needs.

Keep up the good work……

Data Recovery and the Thailand floods

Monday, October 31st, 2011

If you’re not aware, Thailand, the 2nd largest producer of hard drives in the world, has been experiencing some intense flooding which in turn has significantly depleted the worldwide supply of hard disk drives. Western Digital appears to be the worst hit and as result will likely lose its ranking as the #1 producer of disc drives.

Does this affect the data recovery business? YES, you may pay more.

The majority of Data Recovery cases require the replacement of various defective hard drive components and in particular the head assembly. These individual hard drive components cannot be bought on the open market and consequently data recovery companies source complete hard drives for breaking down into parts. This need for specific hard drive parts has in turn fostered a growing business in used hard drive sales. And while a disk drive may have originally sold for $79, these vendors have long been demanding double the price when supplying a data recovery service provider.

NOW, with the worldwide shortage of new hard drives, the used hard drive market is exploding and prices are exploding even more. Many data recovery companies will need to start charging higher rates to cover the increase in parts cost. However, Memofix Data Recovery Services sources 98% of its parts drives from our mother company Memofix Hitech Services and as a result we rarely need to order parts. Memofix has over 26,000 hard drives in stock and services up to 3000 new hard drive every month. With such a large supply we charge less, try harder and complete recoveries quicker. When it matters, call Memofix!
